Ionic bonds are bond where one atom loses an electron, and another atom takes it. If an atom loses an electron, it becomes positive. If an atom gains an electron, it becomes negitive because the electrons and protons cancel each other out. If an atom gains an electron, an atom would have more electrons than protons.
